The Surface Area of Luck

June 19 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

We’ll discuss the following LinkedIn post by Anthony Vicino; Author, Podcast Host, Founding Partner – Invictus Capital:

I’m obsessed with this concept:
The Petri Dish of Serendipity

Serendipity is a fascinating idea:
“the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.”

One of my favorite examples (and where this Petri Dish of Serendipity struck me), occurred when Scottish biologist Alexander Fleming left a Petri dish of cultured bacteria out on his countertop while he went on vacation.

When he came back, he found a mold had contaminated the dish and killed all the bacteria.
And thus was born one of the greatest medical breakthroughs of all time:
The discovery of penicillin.
Talk about a stunning victory for Serendipity.

Okay, so here’s the thing…
Serendipity is interesting in that, by definition, it’s not something you can seek, right?
All we can do is cultivate conditions conducive for its appearance.

So, here are two ways to do just that:

1. Increase your Surface Area of Luck

Luck and Serendipity are kissing cousins.
And when it comes to getting lucky, here’s the framework I’ve found most valuable.
It’s called The Surface Area of Luck.

The premise is simple:
The larger your Surface Area of Luck, the more likely you are to get lucky.

In particular, there are two ways of increasing your Surface Area of Luck:

1. Do the Thing More
2. Tell More People About The Thing You’re Doing

Simply put: Luck = (Passionate) Doing x (Effective) Telling

I’ll leave the doing to you, but if you’re struggling with the telling, here are my two favorite Petri Dishes of Serendipity:

– Masterminds
– Posting Content Online

2. Expand Your Comfort Zone

Okay, let’s go one step beyond expanding your Surface Area of Luck, and talk about something even more important:
Your Surface Area of Life.

Each of us (regardless of our level of ambition) will spend the majority of our lives in the Comfort Zone.
This is the default state of existence which gets us through the day.

But if you’re particularly driven (which I assume you are if reading this), you’ll intentionally seek opportunities to peek outside the bounds of your comfort and to take on new challenges…

And when you do, something interesting happens:
Both YOU and your Comfort Zone grow.
And thus the Surface Area of Your Life increases.

Here’s the paradoxical part:
The more you grow, the more difficult it becomes to find the edges of your capacity and to push into the unknown…
This is why many people stagnate upon reaching a certain baseline of success in life.
Their comfort zone simply outgrew their hunger.

Unfortunately, there’s nothing I can say that’ll help you increase your drive, ambition, or desire to keep pushing the bounds of your potential…
But for what it’s worth, the happiest, most engaged, and most fulfilled people I’ve met have a Surface Area of Life that’s mind-bogglingly big.

There might just be something to that.
